Seeking a PhD Student in Social Sciences or Education for Paid Summer Research Position in Kunming, China

ABOUT MINDS ABROAD

Our organization, Minds Abroad, offers both customized programs for academic groups and set programs for American and European students in Asia, specifically in China, India, Vietnam and Thailand.  Our programs typically last about one month and incorporate classes, travel and a variety of experiential learning activities.  We offer programs incorporating several forms of experiential education, including rural homestays, internships, and extensive service learning. Due to our service learning program we were recently selected as a "Top Ten Best Practices Program" by the Center for Citizen Diplomacy and the U.S. State Department.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Minds Abroad is seeking a PhD student in the field of education or in any relevant social science discipline for a summer research project looking at the impact of experiential education on the study abroad experience for American students in China.  In this position you would coordinate this project from our offices in China in the summer.  Minds Abroad would provide your housing, three meals a day, cell phone, metro card and a monthly stipend during the summer.  In addition, to assist with the research study our organization will provide input into the design of the study, would provide hundreds of man hours of data collection and would help to write the final report.  The research collaborator would be able to be the first author the study and also be able to use the output of the study towards the requirements of their degree.  Moreover Minds Abroad will submit the abstract to over 15 academic meetings and conferences and the research collaborator could co-present the research at any conferences where the abstract was accepted.   This PhD student should be based in a school in Southern California, either in the LA area or the San Diego area, because many of the conferences we will present at will be in Southern California next year.   So while the research position will be based in Kunming we will be presenting at a number of conferences in Southern California.  So you will need to go to Kunming in the summer and be based back in Southern California for the next school year.

Among the topics we hope to explore in our research study are:

1.            Identify demographic factors in student’s background that will lead students to be most impacted by experiential education.
2.            Diagram the impacts of the experiential education experience on students’ cross cultural skills and sense of social responsibility.
3.            Review best practices that can greatly improve experiential education programs to be more promising.
The audience for our research will be study abroad professionals/advisors and academics who are interested in designing more optimal service learning experiences in other countries.
